"Where the Land Meets the Sea is an exploration inspired by the seaside in grey British winters. I have always spent a lot of time walking and thinking on the beach and watching the sea, witnessing the powerful action of the crashing waves in winter."

- Damien Hirst

Arton Contemporary is pleased to present Damien Hirst exclusive laminated giclée prints from Hirst’s ’Where the Land Meets the Sea’ series. The abstract expressionist inspired ‘Coastal Paintings’ reflect the artist’s connection to the power and beauty of the sea.

The ‘Coastal Paintings’ series was originally inspired by the publics reaction to the floors in Hirst’s studio while painting his Cherry Blossoms series. The beauty of the grey concrete splattered as a by product caught his audiences attention. Hirst responded to popular demand by stretching canvas over his entire studio floor for the remainder of his paintings process. He felt a connection between the gray tones of the floor and his fascination with the sea, giving birth to the three part ‘Where the Land Meets the Sea’ series. He pulled inspiration from Robert Motherwell’s ‘Beside the Sea’ paintings and his knowledge of the British coast line to create these works of art. Each piece is named after a coastal town in Britain.

You can feel the energy and process radiating from these pieces. Much like the sea, they are simultaneously quiet and loud. Hirst’s intention and mastery are showcased in this iconic series that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
